MEDIA STATEMENT: Q2 WATER CONSERVATION AND WATER DEMAND MANAGEMENT 2022-23

Water demand management aims to minimise loss and waste, to protect the water resources and to use water efficiently and effectively. Demand management relies on strategies that influence demand to achieve equitable and sustainable use of this finite resource. These methods include: irrigation, rainwater harvesting, governmental restrictions, rate increases, and cultural changes. Demand for water has risen relentlessly over the years as the Emalahleni population climbs past 517 938, the demand surpasses the supply.

Leak detection can significantly increase available water supplies. Recovering water losses and increasing efficiency are the most easily accessible sources of water. The benefits of demand management can be measured in terms of avoided costs, or the incremental savings associated with not having to produce additional units of water or water service. In lieu of saving is to attend the leaks very promptly, the municipality tries to attend leaks within the required times even though sometimes it doesn’t happen due to several challenges internally and externally. One of the external challenges that we will like to educate the community on is building on top of the municipal servitude which extend the time to restore supply in time.

Municipal servitude is a section of a property reserved by the municipality for services such as sewer or storm water lines. These servitudes are usually 2m to 3m wide, at the rear or to the sides of an erf. The community is urged not to encroached the servitude by extending their yards or build on top as they consist of electrical cables, water, sewer and storm water pipes. As and when the pipe burst and need to be repaired, It becomes a challenge when the main pipeline has to be fixed but access denied. the build-up structure on the servitude will be demolished and will not be build up by the municipality thereafter.
