Water conservation and water demand management (WC/WDM) simply refers to the minimization of loss or waste of water through efficient and effective control of the supply and demand for water. The future economic, social, and environmental costs of meeting the water needs of human populations and supporting economic development will depend on our ability to understand and manage water demands. Past research and experience indicate that appropriate water-demand management policies can improve the existing supply-demand balance in water-stressed regions and also offer multiple benefits to all stakeholder groups. Emalahleni local municipality is the Water Services Authority (WSA) and Water Services Provider (WSP) within the area of its jurisdiction, with the primary focus of abstracting, treating, and distributing the water to the end user. The municipality is currently experiencing an average of 46% water losses, which increases the level of demand for water.

- Check your toilet for leaks.
- Stop using your toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket.
- Take shorter showers.
- Install water-saving shower heads or flow restrictors.
- Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and while shaving.
- Check faucets and pipes for leaks.
- Use your automatic dishwasher for full loads only.
- Don't let the faucet run while you clean vegetables.
- If you wash dishes by hand, don't leave the water running for rinsing.
- Water your lawn only when it needs it.
- Plant drought-resistant trees and plants.
- Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants.
